Discover Como lake: Varenna
Oggi andiamo a Varenna, un pittoresco e antico villaggio di pescatori sulla sponda orientale del lago di Como.
Today we go to Varenna, a picturesque and ancient fishing village on the eastern shore of Como lake.
Nonostante sia piccola, Varenna ha molte cose da offrire ai visitatori che vengono qui per rilassarsi in questo piccolo paradiso.
Despite it is small, Varenna has many things to offer to visitors that come here to relax in this little paradise.
Chiesa di San Giorgio
La nostra visita inizia da piazza San Giorgio dove ci fermiamo per visitare l'omonima chiesa, costruita nel XIV secolo in stile Gotico-Romanico, al cui interno si possono ammirare molte opere d'arte del tardo XV e XVI secolo e un bel pavimento in marmo locale.
Our visit stars from San Giorgio square where we stop to visit the church of San Giorgio that was built in the 14th century in Romanesque and Gothic style. Inside we can admire many artworks from the late 15th and 16th century and a beautiful pavement made with local marble.
Sul lato opposto un'altra chiesa, più piccola e antica, è quella di San Giovanni Battista che presenta dei begli affreschi che si pensa risalgano al XIV secolo.
On the opposite site another church, smaller and more ancient, is the church of San Giovanni Battista with beautiful frescoes that it is believed dated back to the fourteenth century.
Da piazza San Giorgio possiamo continuare la nostra visita camminando lungo uno dei tanti vicoli acciottolati fino a raggiungere Riva Grande, la piacevole passeggiata che costeggia il lago. Qui se volete, potete godervi la meravigliosa vista del lago bevendo qualcosa in uno dei locali lungolago o gustando un delizioso gelato in una buona gelateria. Se invece amate prendere il sole, ci sono piccole spiagge dovete potete rilassarvi.
From San Giorgio square we can continue our visit walking along one of the many cobblestone alleys until we reach Riva Grande, the pleasant promenade along the lake. Here if you want you can enjoy the wonderful view of the lake drinking something in one of the café on the lake or tasting a delicious ice-cream in a good ice-cream shop. Otherwise if you love to sunbath, there are small beaches where you can relax.
Percorrendo tutto il lungolago, si giunge all'imbarcadero dove arrivano e partono i traghetti che portano i turisti alla scoperta delle altre località lacustri.
Walking along the promenade, you will arrive at the boat landing where arrive and depart the boats that take tourists on tour to discover the other beautiful villages on Como lake.
Il lago di Como deve anche la sua fama alle meravigliose ville che si affacciano sulle sue tranquille acque e a Varenna se ne trovano ben due: Villa Monastero e Villa Cipressi, entrambe situate nella parte sud del villaggio.
Como lake is famous also for the wonderful villas that overlook its quiet waters and in Varenna we can find two: Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi, both located in the southern part of the village.
Villa Monastero, come potete capire dal nome, era un vecchio monastero che in seguito venne trasformato in una splendida residenza Patrizia. Nella storica dimora si trova anche un centro convegni conosciuto a livello internazionale dove il premio Nobel Enrico Fermi tenne le sue lezioni di fisica nel 1945.
Villa Monastero, as you can understand from its name, was an old monastery that later was changed in a Patrician residence. In the historical villa there is also a conference centre internationally well-known. It was here that the Nobel prize Enrico Fermi did his physic lessons in 1945.
Ma la villa attrae anche numerosi turisti che vengono qui per visitare lo splendido giardino botanico e la “Casa Museo”, un interessante museo con ambienti interamente arredati e raffinate decorazioni che ripercorrono quattro secoli di storia, gusto e stile.
But the villa attracts also many tourists that come here to visit its beautiful botanical garden and “Casa Museo”, an interesting museum with rooms fully furnished and refined decorations that covers four centuries of history and style.
Accanto a Villa Monastero si trova Villa Cipressi che, a differenza della prima, è stata trasformata in hotel di lusso dove i turisti hanno la possibilità di trascorrere le vacanze in un ambiente esclusivo. Costituita da un insieme di edifici, costruiti tra il XVI e il XIX secolo, la villa è circondata da secolari e lussureggianti giardini a terrazza che possono essere visitati dietro pagamento di un biglietto di ingresso.
Next to Villa Monastero there is Villa Cipressi that, unlike villa Monastero, was turned into a luxury hotel where people can spend their vacations on the lake in an exclusive environment. The villa, formed by a compex of buildings that were built between the 16th and the 19th century, is surrounded by secular and lush green terrace gardens that can be visited with an admission fee.
Per quelli che amano camminare, invece, consiglio la passeggiata al castello di Vezio che si trova sul promontorio che sovrasta Varenna da più di mille anni.
For those who enjoy walking, I recommend the walk to Vezio castle which is is located on the bluff overlooking Varenna for over a thousand years.
Sono stata a Varenna molte volte e vi suggerisco di includerla nel vostro itinerario in Italia, soprattutto se il vostro viaggio prevede un soggiorno di alcuni giorni a Milano. Dalla Stazione Centrale del capoluogo lombardo partono ogni giorno numerosi treni che in un'ora vi porteranno in questa bella località lariana.
I have been in Varenna many times and I suggest you to visit it when you come to Italy, especially if your trip include a stays of some days in Milan. Every day from the Central Railway station of the Lombard capital depart numerous trains that in one-hour take you in this beautiful place of Como lake.
Se volete godere appieno della tranquillità di questo meraviglioso borgo, recatevi fuori stagione per evitare l'affollamento di turisti durante l'estate.
If you want to fully enjoy the quiet of this marvellous village, I recommend you to visit Varenna off-season to avoid the crowd of tourists during the summer.
